Mindless Noodling

I’ve often heard songwriters say they discover cool new licks, chords and melody lines from mindless noodling. Try this when you’re too tired for a serious songwriting session or otherwise disinclined.

Just relax, let your mind go blank and noodle on your instrument. Stay awake, but just enough to recognize a good musical phrase when you hear it. Or simply turn on a tape recorder to capture everything.

While this may not be considered the proper way to write a song, it’s one of those tricks that come in handy from time to time.
