Peer pressure and a deadline

When I’m stricken with writer’s block and wallowing in inertia, there are two things that can pull me out fast – peer pressure and a deadline.

When I say peer pressure, I’m talking about positive expectations from your songwriting peers, for example your co-writer, song circle or local songwriters association. Unlike the peer pressure in high school, you want this kind of pressure (it’s support, really). If you don’t have any songwriting peers you can trust, go to the Songwriter’s Tip Jar forum and get something started for yourself.

A deadline is another motivator. I give myself arbitrary deadlines, but that doesn’t work as well as a real deadline. Taxi members have strict deadlines. Other examples of deadlines are when writing for a specific event (like a benefit concert, a recording session) or when writing to a title for a monthly song circle (see the previous post for more on writing to a title).
