Upside down trick

Remember how the Beatles used a recording of a guitar played backwards as an effect in some of their songs? I wouldn’t call that a songwriting technique, but it was an innovative recording technique and a colorful effect.

Here’s a wacky approach to melody ‘writing.’ Instead of using a backwards melody, how about upside down? If you can read a simple melody from sheet music, you can try this trick.

Take the lead sheet to any song. Look at the melody line. Then turn the page upside down. Voila, a new melody, with no copyright restrictions. Or if you like the Beatles’ approach, you can also play it backwards.

Although this is a mechanical process, it can provide material and spark ideas when inspiration is low.
