Yes, people are buying less. Less CDs, for example. But while CD sales are down, downloads are up.

Not only that, but in addition to all the people who currently download your music, many more will soon be able to get it and you don’t have to lift a finger. According to the USDA’s Omnibus Broadband Initiative, 100 million Americans do not have broadband (high speed internet) at home. And the US government wants to give it to them.

I’m not on top of all the details, but the goal, for a variety of reasons (healthcare, distance learning, jobs, etc.) is to bring broadband to more people. For musicians and artists who already have their wares available online, this can only mean a bigger potential audience.

I learned about this at the Future of Music summit.

From Broadband USA:

The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act appropriated $7.2 billion for the Department of Agriculture’s Rural Utilities Service (RUS) and the Department of Commerce’s National Telecommunications Information Administration (NTIA) to expand broadband access and adoption in communities across the U.S., which will increase jobs, spur investments in technology and infrastructure, and provide long-term economic benefits.
